A traditional Khmer wedding is one of Cambodia's most colourful cultural expressions — a multi-day celebration rich in ritual, music, and family symbolism, often spilling out into the street or courtyard of the family home.
A celebration that lasts for days
While modern couples increasingly compress the ceremony into a single day, a full traditional wedding can unfold over one to three days, packed with distinct rituals, each with its own meaning, music, and often a change of traditional outfit.
Key rituals
The Hair Cutting Ceremony (Gat Sah) symbolically cleanses the couple of past troubles. The Ancestor Blessing Ceremony asks for the blessing and protection of family ancestors. The String-Tying Ceremony (Sien Doay) is one of the most moving moments — guests tie red or white strings around the couple's wrists while offering blessings for a long, prosperous marriage.
Music, food, and colour
Traditional Pinpeat orchestral music accompanies much of the ceremony, while the couple typically changes between several ornate silk outfits throughout the day, each representing a different stage of the ritual. A large shared feast for family, friends, and neighbours caps off the celebrations.
